What are the sources for the material on CSH Protocols?
Protocols on CSH Protocols come from a variety of sources, including Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press Manuals and Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Courses. New protocols are actively being solicited by the editorial staff of CSH Protocols, and we encourage all scientists to submit their protocols to the site. More details on submitting protocols can be found here.
What is the connection to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory?
CSH Protocols is editorially managed and published by Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory Press, a division of Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory. Since 1933, the publication of books and other media by has assisted the Laboratory's purpose of furthering the advance and spread of scientific knowledge. Revenue from sales of CSHL Press publications is used solely in support of research at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory.
What subject areas does CSH Protocols cover?
The protocols cover a wide range of fields within molecular and cell biology, from bioinformatics and computational biology to basic microscopy and electrophoresis. The database does not include ‘pure’ chemistry and physics protocols, but we will apply a very broad definition when determining what is appropriate for inclusion. Protocols that span disciplines are of particular interest to us.
How do I know I can trust the protocols?
All published protocols are peer-reviewed by experts to ensure technical quality. In addition, many of the protocols are ‘field-tested’ in CSHL courses—and fine-tuned based on these results.
How often are new protocols added?
New protocols will be published continuously. Users can sign up for RSS feeds and Alerts when new protocols appear in the database.

How do I find a protocol?
There are many different ways to find the protocol you want.
You can see lists of available protocols sorted by Subject Category (also available as a pull-down menu from the button marked "Find Protocols" at the top of every page), lists of protocols from specific Courses, a list of Newly Added Protocols, and a list of Product Protocols supplied by our sponsors.
To search for a specific Protocol, use the Search box available at the top of every page. This will search the text of every Protocol and Product Protocol available through CSH Protocols and give you a list of the most relevant results. For a more detailed search, use the Advanced Search page, where you can search by title, author and other features found within Protocols. The Advanced Search page also allows you to search non-Protocol material on CSH Protocols, including Recipes and Cautions.
