INTRODUCTION
Polyethylenimine (PEI) is an aliphatic polyamine polymer available in a broad range of molecular weights in both linear and multiply branched forms. Because of its high molecular weight and very high cationic charge, PEI is a powerful modifier of surface charge on proteins. The binding of proteins to PEI is salt-dependent. Precipitated proteins are recovered from PEI-protein complexes by elution with NaCl. Ammonium sulfate precipitation is often used after PEI precipitation and elution, because protein will be precipitated by ammonium sulfate, but the PEI will remain in solution.
